From Clothes Fastener to a Symbol of Power

Did you know that brooches were barely considered jewelry in the past? They weren’t even called brooches yet. Instead, they were called fibula (plural fibulae) and were originally used as clothes fasteners. Romans used them to fix their garments such as cloaks and tunics together.

As the fibula became a staple piece, more crafters began incorporating elaborate details. Brooches came in different shapes and adorned with various-colored gems and inscriptions. Heart-shaped brooches with inscriptions of love, faith, and friendship were popular gifts among friends and lovers.

By the 16th and 17th century, brooches became status symbols of wealth and power. They were statement pieces that communicated what cannot be vocalized, according to Art UK.

Nowadays, brooches are mostly worn as fashionable accessories and as a clothes fastener.
