Known to most as the world’s tallest mammal, giraffes are some of the most fascinating creatures in the world. Here are five facts about giraffes you probably didn’t know about!

1. Giraffes only need to drink water once every few days. Most of their water comes from all the plants they eat, which is about a whopping 75 pounds of leaves every day.

2. Giraffes only need 5 to 30 minutes of sleep in a 24-hour period! They often achieve that in quick naps that may last only a minute or two at a time.

3. Adult male giraffes can grow as tall as 18 feet long, three times that of an average human male.

4. A baby giraffe (calf) can come out of its mother at an average height of 6 feet tall.

5. Giraffes can run as fast as 35 miles an hour over short distances, or cruise at 10 mph over longer distances.
