August 2020 Fan of the Month Winners

"In the cookie of life, friends are the chocolate chips."
— Salman Rushdie 🍪

Friendship is the gift that keeps on giving. Any joy life brings is doubled when shared with a friend, while any sorrow is lessened when our friends are with us. We hope that we at ColorIt have become your friends and our friendship helps you to free your creativity. ✨

For our August Fan of the Month challenge, we presented colorists with a heartwarming challenge. They’re to color any page from any ColorIt book that depicts a theme of friendship.

At the end of the month, the ColorIt team will choose three (3) submissions based on the set criteria and three (3) more random picks to keep things fun.

The 6 talented winners will then receive a $25 gift card from ColorIt. You can even double your prize amount if you color the page using any of our coloring mediums.

AUGUST FAN OF THE MONTH WINNER: JULIE DRENNAN

 Julie Drennan Winning Submission

When did you first pick up a coloring book?

I started coloring while recovering from a surgery 2 years ago. I didn't then realize that I will still be coloring today.

Describe your perfect coloring atmosphere.

My art space is on our kitchen peninsula surrounded by our 5 dogs. I'm a morning person, so a majority of my coloring is done before noon. It usually doesn't go well if I try to do any art in the evening. I'm also an audio book addict, so I'm usually listening to my current book. If not that, I have a movie that I know so well that I don't need to concentrate on running in the background.

How has coloring changed or added to your life?

Coloring has certainly brought me joy for the last couple of years. It's a part of my life that is as essential as exercise, good food and gardening. 🙂

What advice would you give someone who isn’t confident about their coloring technique?

I would advise any beginners, and myself from time to time, to just enjoy the process and the beautiful colors of the earth. Only make it as intense as you need to in order to keep it a hobby that you look forward to working on.

What’s your favorite ColorIt book?

I am fortunate to have quite a few ColorIt books and it's challenging to pick a favorite. Wild Animals was my first and still a favorite; yet Colors of the Decades, Steampunk & Around the World are my latest and so much fun as well.

What title would you like to see in the future?

As far as future books go, I'm very much into the performing arts and live entertainment. I think a book to include pictures from Broadway, orchestras, string quartets, marching bands, rock concerts, sporting events and my first love of the arts BALLET would be great!!! Especially now when so many of us are missing our theater, sports and musical outings. Oh, I forgot, add opera to the wish list.

When did you first pick up a coloring book?

I started adult coloring when I retired. I needed a hobby that was both fun and affordable. I quickly realized the benefits of coloring as art therapy. It helps tremendously dealing with the struggles of life with osteoarthritis.

Describe your perfect coloring atmosphere.

I practice mindfulness and relaxation when I am coloring. I like a quiet atmosphere with lots of natural light.

Tell us about your creative process when you get ready to color.

My creative process evolves. I seldom start with a plan. I simply let the design speak to me. My intent is to always have fun and learn from my mistakes. Anyone who isn't confident is not having fun.

What advice would you give someone who isn’t confident about their coloring technique?

My advice would be to watch a few videos, stop seeking approval from others, practice and let your creativity flow. Art is subjective. Do you and let your personality shine through.

What’s your favorite ColorIt book?

My favorite ColorIt book is Blissful Scenes 1. There is something about taking a scenes and adding color to it that brings it to life. I find that very satisfying!

AUGUST FAN OF THE MONTH WINNER: BIRDIE ANDERSON

Birdie Anderson Winning Submission

When did you first pick up a coloring book?

Describe your perfect coloring atmosphere.

While watching TV.

Tell us about your creative process when you get ready to color.

Once I decide where to start I pick my colors one color at a time.

How has coloring changed or added to your life?

Coloring has been a blessing and joy in my life. It's a very relaxing activity.

What advice would you give someone who isn’t confident about their coloring technique?

Don't be afraid to try out new coloring techniques or products. It's fun to experiment. You will probably not like everything you try and you will make mistakes and it's ok. It should be fun, not stressful.

What’s your favorite ColorIt book?

Mandalas 1.

What title would you like to see in the future?

A travel book with animals or scenery would be nice.
