August Fan of the Month Winners

Posted by Audrey Eytchison on

August Fan of the Month
Each month, our judges Erika, AJ, and Audrey select 3 winning submissions based on very specific judging criteria. This is a very tough process since the talent within the ColorIt Community is beyond impressive! We are always so excited to see the submissions come rolling in each month. We want to reward all of our colorists, which is why we also select 3 submissions at random! Each winner receives a $25 ColorIt gift card, but this month we had contestants DOUBLE their prize by having their ColorIt Colored Pencils, Markers, or Gel Pens in their submission photo. Read on to see exclusive ColorIt interviews with some of August's winners, their winning pages, and more!

When did you first pick up a coloring book?

Probably when I was 3 or 4. I can remember going to my great aunts house and her having coloring books and crayons waiting for me.

Describe your perfect coloring atmosphere.

Any place is perfect for me except a car, I get motion sickness lol.

Tell us about your creative process when you get ready to color.

Well, I already have a coloring table set up with: gels, markers, pencils, & crayons. The book I am working on at the time is on the table ready for me whenever I find that perfect page. So there isn't much to do but get a drink, find something to listen to as background noise and dig in to coloring.

How has coloring changed or added to your life?

Coloring has become a big part of my life. I have several health issues that cause me pain and coloring when I have to wait for a med to kick in brings out some of my most vibrant and prettiest work. In turn I am able to give these pictures to friends or random people to help brighten their day and it helps make me feel better. It adds life to my life.

What advice would you give someone who isn't confident about their coloring technique?

Keep at it! No one is perfect at it. You have to practice and build your own style. But most of all? Enjoy it!

What's your favorite ColorIt book?

I have only used 1book & that is the Best of ColorIt. I lover it! I really want to get into the Colorful Quilts.

What title would you like to see in the future?

I would like to see some cartoon characters or something to do with landscapes.

Is there anything else you want to share about your love of coloring?

Aside from it being a calming almost zen experience, being able to share my pieces with others is a great experience! I love it!!!!

When did you first pick up a coloring book?

I colored a lot as a child. My mom always made sure I had coloring books and crayons. I had never heard of adult coloring until in a Walgreens about three years ago and saw an adult coloring book. I decided to buy it and give coloring another try. I had to buy some colored pencils (first ones weren't so great) since I had nothing to color with. I was hooked immediately!

Describe your perfect coloring atmosphere.

I color at my "crafting" table in my computer room. I have a huge hanging lamp above the table that gives me lots of light and I have all my coloring supplies right around me. I usually play music on my computer while I color and my cat lays in the desk chair right beside me and keeps me company. I do have to say though that one of my favorite places to color is when a few of my friends get together and color. We always have such a great time!

Tell us about your creative process when you get ready to color.

I get out my books and find a picture that calls to me. I look at it until I can "see" it. That means I can actually see a finished picture just the way I want it....colors and technique. If I can't "see" it then I move on until I find one I can "see." Then I get the supplies out that I want to use and turn on my music and just go for it.

How has coloring changed or added to your life?

Coloring helps me fill my time. I am retired and I have a huge amount of free time. I am alone since I lost my husband about 5 1/2 years ago and coloring helps with the boredom and loneliness that comes with aging and retirement. I had a volunteer job for around three years but had to quit that due to back issues. I can sit down and color and the time just flies by. I just get lost in my picture and the world just falls away. What can I say.....I LOVE to color!

What advice would you give someone who isn't confident about their coloring technique?

We all know there is no right way to color. It is your creation so just create it! Coloring is supposed to fun and relaxing so don't fret over every little thing. If you make a boo-boo (which we ALL do) so what? No one starts out great. Lord knows I didn't. You will improve with practice and if you don't.....who cares! Just enjoy your coloring time. It is YOUR time....relax into it.

What's your favorite ColorIt book?

I think my favorite Colorit book has to be Blissful Scenes. I love several of them but that has to be my pick. I love the style of the artist that drew it. The pictures are just so peaceful and calm. They are easy to color without so much overdone clutter. Lots of scenery and lovely ocean scenes too.

What title would you like to see in the future?

I would REALLY love a Blissful Scenes 2!

Is there anything else you want to share about your love of coloring?

Coloring has not only helped me with relaxation but it has also given me a new "family." I am part of a huge coloring community and everyone shares my same interests.....coloring. Now how often can you say that? It has kind of opened up a whole new world for me. Who would have thought that something I loved to do as a child would also be such comfort as an older adult.

Colors of Nature

"Coloring has always been a favorite hobby of mine. It is exciting to me how the past several years the coloring hobby has changed and improved with better books, pens and pencils. When I started coloring, we didn't have the adult variety that we do now. I love to curl up in my chair with my lap desk and color, which I try to do everyday. My husband is in the process of building me a great cabinet to store all of my things so they all are at my finger tips, (I hope its big)! Coloring gives me the time to relax and unwind, which the older I get, the more I need! It gives me a lot of peace; it's been life changing. For the people that aren't confident in your coloring... Don't lose hope. With today's technology you can learn a lot, ex. Wednesday evenings with ColorIt, YouTube, join a coloring group on Facebook, have coloring parties with your friends and family and get ideas from them. Always remember that however your picture turns out, it's yours, you did it and it's a masterpiece... The next one will get better and better. Colorit offers great books, my favorite so far is Blissful Scenes, and would like to continue seeing more books of that sort."
